Brand USA Talks Travel Podcast interview

It was my pleasure to be interviewed by Mark Lapidus from Brand USA Talks Travel podcast. We talked travel marketing, trends, insights from judging the ESTO awards, the annual premier event in the US for acknowledging excellence in travel advertising and promotions. We also dove into the back story on my parallel brand, carryonqueen.com, and how leveraging writing and content creation has become so important for travel brands and DMOs in reaching target audiences. Of course we also chatted about opportunities realized in playing in this space at the intersection of both brands – carryonqueen.com and fiveminutemarketing.com, from writing, to consulting and speaking.

At the heart though, this episode is chocked full of tips for marketers working in the travel space, about how to connect well with your target audience these days, and adapt strategies to the rapidly shifting landscape that marketing efforts are built on, while also keeping creativity front and center.

Here’s an excerpt from the show notes. You can listen to the full interview on your favorite podcast platform here: https://www.thebrandusa.com/podcast/storytelling-strategy-and-future-marketing

The “Carry On Queen” Mary Charleson joins Brand USA Talks Travel to talk marketing strategy, storytelling, and smart packing. From insights into the awards at ESTO to travel trends in AI-driven content, Mary offers actionable tips for DMOs and industry pros alike. Plus: media platforms that travel brands shouldn’t overlook. Mary Charleson is a marketing speaker, author, and consultant.

“It’s no longer about your followers. I mean, it kind of gives you validity, but followers are vanity metrics these days, because your content is going out to an audience beyond just the people that follow you. And so understanding that, and how you produce content that brings people into the the top part of that funnel in terms of exposure, then generating content that gets engagement and then through to purchase and loyalty. That’s where the magic happens.”

We stayed clear of politics and tariff talks, my one caveat, given this was recorded back in early March and I knew it wouldn’t come out until late April/early May. Brand USA has some amazing land and people behind it. The world is hoping for a soft landing after the turbulence!
